This subproject addresses the variety of security related situations in which hostage holding – from Antiquity to Early Modern Age – was applied. Furthermore, it asks, why and under which circumstances precisely the instrument of hostage holding were mentioned. Firstly, hostage holding served as safeguard regarding foreign affairs. However, it could indicate a large number of various forms of security and insecurity too, for instance by articulating power imbalances and thus reproducing insecurity.
