Abstract

Climate change is widely seen as a security issue, and without the securitisation of climate change, urgent policies of mitigation and adaptation may not be possible to agree upon, both on the national and the international level. At the same time, securitisation is normatively problematic. This talk summarises the results of a research project comparing the process of securitisng climate change in four countries. Who were the actors diriving this securitisation? What made specific securitising moves successful? And what are the political and normative consequences of these securitisations? The results show that securitisations differ depending on the specific circumstances in which they unfold, and that this difference matters for climate policies.
