Current Research Project

Working Title: “(Un-)Sicherheit und Souveränität in der europäischen Währungs- und Finanzpolitik (1970-1999/2002)“

The PhD research project investigates the development, change and differentiation of statehood in the European multi-level governance and the resulting conflicts. Specifically, it focuses on the securitization of sovereignty in the area of monetary and financial integration. Experiences of crisis and insecurity, according to the underlying thesis, have an impact on notions of sovereignty as well as on the relationship between national and supranational sovereignty. Methodologically, the project analyses the security discourse on financial-monetary sovereignty in the UK, France and Germany – three countries that represented very different political positions in the financial-monetary unification process. The subject of analysis is the media and parliamentary debates as well as the decision-making processes at government level.

Key research activities
