"Rampart Nations. Bulwark Myths of East European Multiconfessional Societies in the Age of Nationalism"

The “bulwark” or antemurale myth—whereby a region is imagined as a defensive barrier against a dangerous Other—has been a persistent strand in the development of Eastern European nationalisms. While historical studies of the topic have typically focused on clashes and overlaps between sociocultural and religious formations, Rampart Nations delves deeper to uncover the mutual transfers and multi-sided national and interconfessional conflicts that helped to spread bulwark myths through Europe’s eastern periphery over several centuries. Ranging from art history to theology to political science, this volume offers new ways of understanding the political, social, and religious forces that continue to shape identity in Eastern Europe.

Die sozialen Reformen des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts wurden von der Angst vor revolutionärem Aufruhr befeuert – so lautet eine beliebte, aber kaum belegte These. Wachsende soziale Spannungen, vor allem die beiden großen Hafenstreiks in London 1889 und Hamburg 1896/97 bedrohten die urbane Sicherheitskultur dramatisch. Durch Revolutionsängste wurden meist Forderungen nach repressiven Maßnahmen laut, die auf sozialen Ausschluss zielten und nicht auf inkludierende Sozialreformen. Die Autorin diskutiert verschiedene konzeptionellen Entwürfe von Sicherheit in den urbanen Zentren des 19. Jahrhunderts und hinterfragt die oft drastischen Reaktionen und korrigiert scheinbare Eindeutigkeiten alter Grundannahmen.

Die Definition kritischer Infrastrukturen ist ein politischer Prozess, in dem durch die Charakterisierung als solche Sicherheitsvorstellungen und Bedrohungsszenarien gleichermaßen inkludiert sind. Ihrem Schutz wird daher höchste Priorität beigemessen, um wirtschaftliche, soziale und politische Ziele und Handlungen zu rechtfertigen. Wie werden kritische Infrastrukturen eingesetzt, um Sicherheit herzustellen?
