The SFB 138 welcomes Dr Matthew Gordon as a new Fellow!

On February 15, 2023, Dr. Matthew Gordon started his fellowship at the CRC 138. For 6 months he will do research in close cooperation with the subproject B05 "Securitization and Desecuritization in International Trusteeship Administrations” (headed by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Bonacker). Matthew Gordon recently completed his PhD at SOAS University of London with a thesis entitled “The Somaliland Social Covenant. An Experiment in Non-State Coexistence”. At the CRC 138 he will deepen his research on the historical evolution of Somaliland’s indigenous security architecture in the light of global epochal shifts.

The CRC 138 welcomes Prof. Dr Shakila Yacob as a new Fellow!

On February 15, 2023, Prof. Dr. Shakila Yacob started her fellowship at the CRC 138. For 6 months she will do research in the subproject C06 "Foreign Economic Securitization. Economic Security Beyond the Nation-State" (headed by Prof. Dr. Christian Kleinschmidt and Prof. Dr. Nina Kleinöder). Shakila Yacob is a professor of business history and international businessat the University of Malaya, where she was previously executive director of the International Institute of Public Policy and Management (INPUMA). She has conducted research in the UK and the US, among other countries. Her research focuses on economic and business history during the period of colonialism and decolonization in Southeast Asia.

The CRC 138 welcomes Dr Emily Whewell as a new Fellow!

Dr Emily Whewell from the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt am Main will work in subproject C08 "Security and Empire. Dynamics of Securitization in Colonial Spaces of the British Empire, 1780-1920" (headed by Prof. Dr. Benedikt Stuchtey). She will be pursuing a research project on British imperial security laws and their legacy on the India-China and Myanmar-China frontiers.

The CRC 138 welcomes Dr Ivan Bakalov as a new Fellow!

Dr Ivan Bakalov completed his PhD at the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) with a thesis entitled „Setting soft power in motion: Tracing the Mechanisms of Russian Soft Power in Ukraine“. As fellow in the sub-project B05 "Securitization and Desecuritization in International Trusteeship Administrations” (headed by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Bonacker) he is deepening his work on Russian soft power, language policy and administrative-territorial reform in Ukraine. Before, he was lecturer at the Institute of Political Science at Leiden University. He will follow up with his research in sub-project B05, where he is dealing with the subject of internationalized governance in post-imperial contexts using the example of the Union State (Russian-Belarussian Union).

Aidan Gnoth takes over post-doc position in sub-project B05

Since 16th of January 2023, Dr Aidan Gnoth is post-doctoral fellow in sub-project B05 "Securitization and Desecuritization in International Trusteeship Administrations” at Philipps-University of Marburg, with an affiliation at the Center for Conflict Studies (headed by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Bonacker).

The CRC 138 welcomes Dr Charlotte Backerra as a new Fellow!


On November 1st Dr Charlotte Backerra started her fellowship at the SFB 138. For a duration of 5 month she will conduct research at the SFB 138 for her current project on “dynastic economy” and cooperate closely with the subproject A03 “Securitization and dynastic marriage politics” headed by Prof. Dr. Christoph Kampmann. Dr. Charlotte Backerra was awarded a doctorate from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz for her PhD thesis „Wien und London, 1727–1735. Faktoren der internationalen Beziehungen im frühen 18. Jahrhundert“ (engl. “Vienna and London, 1727-1735. Factors of international relations in the early 18th century”). In her current research she focuses on the history of monarchy, dynasty, gender, economy, diplomacy and espionage.

The CRC 138 welcomes Dr Andrew Johnson as a new Fellow!


From 1st of October, Dr Andrew Johnson officially starts his fellowship and participates in the CRC’s exchange and research until 31st of March while affiliated with subproject C02 “Security, police and urban space”, led by Professor Sabine Mecking.
He recently defended his PhD unter the title “On the Uses and Abuses of History for the Abolition of Police” at the University of California Santa Barbara. The thesis explores the historical formation and development of policing institutions, and why this history is essential but hinders abolitionist approaches.
 
A warm welcome to Dr Johnson and we wish him a good stay.

Ulrich Niggemann wechselt an das Institut für europäische Kulturgeschichte in Augsburg

Zum 1. April 2016 wird Ulrich Niggemann die Stelle des Direktors und geschäftsführenden wissenschaftlichen Sekretärs am Institut für europäische Kulturgeschichte der Universität Augsburg übernehmen.
Das Institut hat die Aufgabe, europäische Kulturgeschichte in unterschiedlichen Projekten zu erforschen und die in den regionalen Bibliotheken und Archiven vorhandenen reichen Quellenbestände zu erschließen. Wesentlich geprägt wurde das Institut in den vergangenen Jahren durch Prof. Dr. Wolfgang E.J. Weber, der 2015 in den Ruhestand getreten ist.
Herr Niggemann wird die Leitung des Instituts übernehmen und an der Universität Augsburg Lehrveranstaltungen v.a. für den dortigen B.A.-Studiengang "Europäische Kulturgeschichte" und den M.A.-Studiengang "Interdisziplinäre Europastudien" anbieten.

Professor Andreas Langenohl, Leiter des Teilprojekts C 05 - Politische Sicherheit und Finanzmarktstabilität, legt ein Papier mit dem Titel "Staatsschulden und ihre Sicherheiten: Anmerkungen zur Debatte um den Grexit" vor. Rekonstruiert wird die Sicherheitsdimension der Grexit-Debatte und von Staatsschulden im weiteren Sinne. Es handelt sich dabei nicht um eine rigorose empirische Analyse der gegenwärtigen Debatte, sondern um eine theorie- und konzeptgeleitete Einschätzung der Konfliktlage rund um die Griechenland-Krise.

Ulrich Niggemann wechselt an das Institut für europäische Kulturgeschichte in Augsburg

Zum 1. April 2016 wird Ulrich Niggemann die Stelle des Direktors und geschäftsführenden wissenschaftlichen Sekretärs am Institut für europäische Kulturgeschichte der Universität Augsburg übernehmen.
Das Institut hat die Aufgabe, europäische Kulturgeschichte in unterschiedlichen Projekten zu erforschen und die in den regionalen Bibliotheken und Archiven vorhandenen reichen Quellenbestände zu erschließen. Wesentlich geprägt wurde das Institut in den vergangenen Jahren durch Prof. Dr. Wolfgang E.J. Weber, der 2015 in den Ruhestand getreten ist.
Herr Niggemann wird die Leitung des Instituts übernehmen und an der Universität Augsburg Lehrveranstaltungen v.a. für den dortigen B.A.-Studiengang "Europäische Kulturgeschichte" und den M.A.-Studiengang "Interdisziplinäre Europastudien" anbieten.

Professor Andreas Langenohl, Leiter des Teilprojekts C 05 - Politische Sicherheit und Finanzmarktstabilität, legt ein Papier mit dem Titel "Staatsschulden und ihre Sicherheiten: Anmerkungen zur Debatte um den Grexit" vor. Rekonstruiert wird die Sicherheitsdimension der Grexit-Debatte und von Staatsschulden im weiteren Sinne. Es handelt sich dabei nicht um eine rigorose empirische Analyse der gegenwärtigen Debatte, sondern um eine theorie- und konzeptgeleitete Einschätzung der Konfliktlage rund um die Griechenland-Krise.
