Subproject C02 — Security and urban space in London and Hamburg from the 1880s to the 1980s
second funding stage (2018-2021)
The subproject questions in synchronous and diachronic comparison perspective how social tensions and conflicts have an effect on the passing on or the chance of various heuristics or techniques of security. The focal points are the London unemployment riots of 1886/87 and the Hamburg dockers’ strike of 1896/97 as well as the 1960s and 1970s. Contemporaries as well as historians repeatedly stressed that these periods can be described as periods of social upheaval as well as times of urban crises. Approaching the examination from a perspective of town history provides the opportunity of a differentiated elaboration of the interplay of competing notions of security.
